Master German A1 Akkusativ Prepositions: The FUDGO Formula

Welcome back to our German A1 Grammar series! Today, we are focusing on a very important topic: Akkusativ Prepositions.

Prepositions are small words that show place, time, or direction (like in, for, through). In German, certain prepositions are so powerful that they force the following noun to change into the Akkusativ case. I have written this guide entirely in simple English, with a touch of Urdu/Hindi translations, so you can fully understand the core concepts.

🧠 The Main Rule (Buniyadi Qanoon)

When using an Akkusativ preposition, only the masculine nouns change:

  • The masculine article der changes to den.

  • The masculine article ein changes to einen.

  • All other articles (die, das) remain exactly the same. (Sirf masculine words change hote hain, baki sab same rehta hai).

🪄 The Magic Formula: FUDGO

To memorize the Akkusativ prepositions effortlessly, just remember the word FUDGO. Whenever you see one of these five prepositions, always apply the Akkusativ case!

1. Für (F)

  • English Meaning: For

  • Urdu/Hindi Meaning: Ke liye

  • Usage: Used when you are doing something for someone, or an item is meant for someone.

  • Example Sentence: Das Geschenk ist für den Vater. (The gift is for the father).

  • Explanation: Since 'Vater' is masculine (der), we change it to 'den' because of 'für'.

2. Um (U)

  • English Meaning: Around (a place) / At (a specific time)

  • Urdu/Hindi Meaning: Ke ird-gird / Waqt batane ke liye

  • Usage: Used to describe moving around an object or stating an exact time.

  • Example Sentence: Der Kurs beginnt um 8 Uhr. (The course begins at 8 o'clock).

3. Durch (D)

  • English Meaning: Through

  • Urdu/Hindi Meaning: Mein se guzar kar

  • Usage: Used when going through a physical space, such as a park, tunnel, or door.

  • Example Sentence: Wir gehen durch den Park. (We walk through the park).

4. Gegen (G)

  • English Meaning: Against

  • Urdu/Hindi Meaning: Ke khilaf / Ki taraf (takarana)

  • Usage: Used to indicate physical impact, opposition against someone, or an estimated time.

  • Example Sentence: Das Auto fährt gegen den Baum. (The car drives against the tree).

5. Ohne (O)

  • English Meaning: Without

  • Urdu/Hindi Meaning: Ke bina / baghair

  • Usage: Used when you lack something or perform an action without a specific item. (Tip: We usually do not use an article after 'ohne').

  • Example Sentence: Ich trinke Kaffee ohne Zucker. (I drink coffee without sugar).

📖 The FUDGO Master Paragraph

Let's put all five prepositions into one short story to see how they work together in real German sentences!

Ich gehe heute durch den Park. Ich kaufe Blumen für meine Mutter. Ich laufe schnell und falle gegen einen Stuhl! Mein Bruder kommt auch, aber ohne seinen Hund. Wir treffen uns alle um 18 Uhr.

English Translation: Today I walk through the park. I buy flowers for my mother. I run fast and fall against a chair! My brother is coming too, but without his dog. We are all meeting at 6 PM.
