Title: The Ultimate Guide to the German Passive Voice (B2 Level)

Welcome back to Easy German With Abid! If you are preparing for your Goethe or TELC B2 exams, you already know that the Passive Voice is everywhere. It is the heart of German grammar.

Today, we are going to do a complete DNA analysis of the German Passive. We will break down everything into simple, easy-to-understand rules. No more confusion, no more memorization—just pure logic!

1. What is the Passive Voice? (The Core Concept)

In an Active sentence, the "Doer" (the person doing the action) is the hero. In a Passive sentence, the "Action" itself is the hero. Who did it? That is either not important, or we just don't know.

  • Active: Der Mechaniker repariert das Auto. (The mechanic is repairing the car. Focus = Mechanic)

  • Passive: Das Auto wird repariert. (The car is being repaired. Focus = Car and the Action)

2. Vorgangspassiv (The Action Passive)

This is the standard passive voice. It focuses on a process or an action that is currently happening.

The Golden Formula: Conjugated "werden" (Position 2) + Partizip II (End of the sentence)

The 3 Rules to Change Active to Passive:

  1. Akkusativ becomes Nominativ: The object in the active sentence becomes the new subject in the passive sentence.

  2. Verb Transformation: The main verb turns into Partizip II and goes to the end. We put werden in position 2.

  3. What happens to the Doer?

    • If it is a person/company, use "von + Dativ" (e.g., von dem Arzt).

    • If it is a thing/natural cause, use "durch + Akkusativ" (e.g., durch den Sturm).

    • If you don't need it, just delete it!

The Tense Matrix for Vorgangspassiv: Here is how it changes across different tenses using the example: The doctor operates on the patient.

TensePassive FormulaPassive Sentence
Präsenswerden + PIIDer Patient wird operiert.
Präteritumwurden + PIIDer Patient wurde operiert.
Perfektsein + PII + wordenDer Patient ist operiert worden.
Plusquamperfektwaren + PII + wordenDer Patient war operiert worden.
Futur Iwerden + PII + werdenDer Patient wird operiert werden.

🔥 Pro-Tip for Perfekt: Never use geworden in the passive perfect tense! Always use just worden. ("ist operiert geworden" = WRONG ❌, "ist operiert worden" = RIGHT ✅).

3. Passive with Modal Verbs (The Boss Level)

When we add modal verbs (können, müssen, sollen, dürfen), the formula shifts slightly. The modal verb takes Position 2, and the passive parts go to the end.

The Formula: Modal Verb (Pos 2) + Partizip II + werden (End)

TenseExample SentenceMeaning
PräsensDas Auto muss repariert werden. The car must be repaired.
PräteritumDas Auto musste repariert werden. The car had to be repaired.
PerfektDas Auto hat repariert werden müssen. The car had to be repaired.

🔥 Secret Perfekt Trick:
In the Perfekt tense with modal verbs, we do not use Partizip II for the modal verb. Instead, we use the Double Infinitive at the end (werden müssen). The helping verb at position 2 is always haben.

--- PART 2: Zustandspassiv and Passiversatzformen ---

4. Zustandspassiv (The State/Result Passive)

If Vorgangspassiv is the "Action", then Zustandspassiv is the "Result". The action is already finished. We are now just looking at the final condition or state.

  • Action (Vorgang): Das Geschäft wird geschlossen. (The shop is being closed right now. The shutter is coming down.)

  • Result (Zustand): Das Geschäft ist geschlossen. (The shop is closed. The action is done.)

The Golden Formula: Conjugated "sein" (Position 2) + Partizip II (End of the sentence)

TensePassive FormulaExample Sentence
Präsensist/sind + PIIDas Fenster ist geöffnet. (The window is open.)
Präteritumwar/waren + PIIDas Fenster war geöffnet. (The window was open.)

🔥 Pro-Tip:
We usually do not use "von" or "durch" in Zustandspassiv. If you want to mention the doer, you should use the Action Passive (Vorgangspassiv) instead!

5. Passiversatzformen (Passive Alternatives for B2)

At the B2 level, examiners want to see if you can express the passive voice in a smarter, more elegant way. Passiversatzformen are sentences that look Active but mean Passive.

Every passive alternative has a hidden Modal Verb inside it! Here are the 4 main types:

Type A: "sich lassen + Infinitiv" (Hidden meaning: können)

  • Passive: Das Handy kann repariert werden.

  • Alternative: Das Handy lässt sich reparieren. (The mobile can be repaired).

Type B: "sein + zu + Infinitiv" (Hidden meaning: können, müssen, nicht dürfen) This is very formal, often used in official letters.

  • Passive: Die Rechnung muss sofort bezahlt werden.

  • Alternative: Die Rechnung ist sofort zu bezahlen.

Type C: Adjectives ending in "-bar" or "-lich" (Hidden meaning: können)

  • Passive: Das Wasser kann getrunken werden.

  • Alternative: Das Wasser ist trinkbar. (Drinkable).

  • Passive: Der Text kann gelesen werden.

  • Alternative: Der Text ist gut leserlich. (Readable).

Type D: Reflexive Verbs (Hidden meaning: können + Passive)

  • Passive: Das Buch kann gut gelesen werden.

  • Alternative: Das Buch liest sich gut. (The book reads well).

--- PART 3: Exam Hacks and Final Quiz ---

6. Golden Hacks for Goethe and TELC Exams 💡

If you are taking an exam, keep these three cheat codes in mind:

  • Hack 1: The "Müssen" Trap! If the exam gives you a sentence with muss (e.g., Der Text muss übersetzt werden), you CANNOT use "sich lassen" or "-bar". Why? Because those only mean können. For müssen, you must use sein + zu (Der Text ist zu übersetzen).

  • Hack 2: The Dativ Rule. Verbs that only take a Dative object (like helfen, danken) stay Dative in the passive voice! They never change to Nominative.

    • Active: Der Arzt hilft dem Mann.

    • Passive: Dem Mann wird geholfen. (Der Mann wird geholfen is a huge mistake!)

  • Hack 3: Kill the Subject in Alternatives. When transforming a sentence into a Passiversatzform, drop words like "man" or "von dem Arzt" completely.

7. Test Your Knowledge! (Quiz Time)
